On Praise and Recognition

I've been Mothering for over 15 years now. It's nice to hear that you're doing a good job every now and then isn't it? Who doesn't like a pat on the back or for someone to recognize that you work hard? Sure a pay check would be nice but that's not why we're in this business is it?

My Dad is always quick with words of encouragement. I love that even at my age and with 4 of my own children, I still look to my own parents for advice and support. He reminded me yesterday to let my husband know that he's doing a good job too. Something I don't do enough of, I know. I get all caught up in my own day of diapers, driving, dinners and dishes that I don't realize that he's had a long day too.

I can't stand that game of "who's day was worse"...and believe me, it's usually me screaming.."I win!"....Yes, when Steve comes home from work, I'm knee deep in homework and housework but I need to remember that he's worked just as hard. Would it kill me to put a smile on my face (even a fake one) when he walks in the door instead of throwing a kid at him?

I tell my kids all the time to treat people how you would like to be treated...I need to do the same.

  1. Thanks for this reminder. I rarely acknowledge Brad's efforts. And that's wrong.
I'll be smiling when he comes home tonight--even if my teeth are gritted behind it!

  3. I am so glad you realize this in time to do something about it. Too many wives learn too late. You are a great mother and Steve is an equally great father. The perfect pair! xoxo

  4. Wonderful, thoughtful post. Lynn works way harder than I do, and I try to always ask him what I can do to ease his burden. He never complains....God love him! Even though he's weary and can't wait to get home, he'll still stop and pick up a bottle of wine or something I forgot at the grocery store.
Give Steve lots of loves! xoxo

  5. i love these words- we do teach our children to treat others as we would like to be treated...do unto others...& even explain about a good dose of kharma- but sometimes it seems that 'our' jobs are just a little bit harder than everyone else's!& to be honest i do think we perhaps balance alot more- multi task alot more- & this is what makes us feel so stretched at times...but in saying this i am going to thank my husband tonite for the cup of tea he made me before he wen to work this morning....and for 'going' to work for us 4 at home knee deep in the rest of our life together- .....your'e a wise woman xx

  7. You are so right! The blame game never seems to have a winner. One day I decided I was really sick of that stressor and just gave up. A little good listening paid off big... he returns the favor now.

  8. Beautiful photo. I can smell the baby freshness. We play the game who had a harder time of it, when hubs is away for work. I imagine him laying in a comfy queen bed watching TV, eating out, going for drinks, etc, while I hold down the fort. It makes me cranky when he comes home tired, complaining he had poor sleeps. I need to start working on this, as he has to travel a fair amount.

  9. Wise (young) woman.....you're so on target! Since I am (a lot) older I can blabber on, right? The BEST advice I've ever gotten is: "...make sure all is right between you & your spouse OVER you and your children. He'll be there when that nest is empty." And, I worked it. The marriage. And it's paid off. :) I do believe lifestyles from the '50s, Leave It to Beaver & Father Knows Best really DID know best! Put on some gloss & a smile and treat him like a king. You'll be glad you did. Sorry about my soapbox. BTW-that photo is too much. A-dor-able! xoxo
