Heavy stuff

I'm not really techy at all. I'm much more old fashioned..prefer a  handwritten letter over email...would rather play a boardgame over a  video game..but I have to say that I would probably pay a few hundred dollars per kid for an iPad or Kindle just so they wouldn't have to lug books around. Hannah's backpack weighs  more than she does..and not only that, it doesn't fit all the books she needs to carry so she carries an extra bookbag...plus her violin..and her lunch. It's ridiculous.

Listen, I love books. You all know that about me now..I really have no desire for an iPad..even though they look really cool. But if I were a student don't you think it would make my life so much easier...and lighter?

  1. oh i soo hear you! my poor ella carries her bag, her netball gear, her music bag & her saxophone to school...it actually determines the days we walk to school, & the days we don't! with the 3 kids 'bits' for school {like your mob}- i have decided that the best, slightly retro cool, definately not techy cool, way to get everyone & everything there is to buy a wagon- i have found a great looking wooden wagon on ebay with big strong wheels & i am going to load it up & pull everything, but the kids, to school...although i can just see little miss 4 and three quarters ditching her bike for the wagon trip!
    what do you think??

  2. Sometimes I see my 12 year old get off the bus and I can't believe all the stuff she is dragging around. Poor kid. I really do worry about her back. She is tiny and she looks like she is just going to get pulled over backward and stuck on her back like a turtle.

  3. I remember the aches I'd get in my neck and shoulders after a day at school. There's got to be an easier way.

Darling blog. Don't know how I found you, but glad I did!

  4. Yes to it all! By the way, the iPad is so dreamy, and they have not even perfected it yet! I love my books too, but the ones I read tend to be long, and my hand can hurt after while from a heavy book. The Kindle or iPad solves that problem. This will happen across the country someday. Replacing the heavy books with technology. I'm for it to get rid of the heavy backpack!

  5. I couldn't agree more! It is ridiculous that they have to carry that amount!! One thing I have done is asked each teacher @ the beginning of each year for an extra copy of the key textbooks (math, social studies~the heavier books) and we keep them at home for the year. This helps a bit. I do worry about their little backs. Also we don't do the roller bag because then they will pack it with more & then they have to deadlift it to get in on & off the bus~which somehow seems worse. Luv Brookie's comment & of course I LOVE all of your posts! hugs,Cathy

  6. They've done away with lockers here for the high schoolers, so the kids all have extra sets of books at home as well. But that makes little difference.
I also love books, and I'm a little afraid of the iPad/Kindle thing. I don't want to hold hundreds of books in my hand, because I like looking at them on my shelf. I'm sure I'll be dragged kicking and screaming into this new technology and then I'll wonder what I ever did before.
    Until then . . .

  7. My older kid's bookbags...seriously, I can hardly lift them. WAY too much homework. I couldn't read an entire book from a computer screen...an amazing headache would come my way after about an hour.

  8. I remember watching a program on how bad it is for their backs and it still bothers me. I make sure the back pack is a really good one from a sport store, as it does make a difference. I am looking forward to high school for my eldest as the semester system will cut the books in half. I've considered trying to walk with the kids to school but their packs are so heavy I just don't think it's wise.

  9. I always worried when my kids were at this stage that they would have back problems for life! There has got to be an easier way.
