Plimouth Plantation and I'm Giving

The kids had no school on Monday.
I thought it was a great day to go to

It's literally 15 minutes from my house.
And it's the first time I've taken the kids.
Will has gone on a field trip with school
but the other kids hadn't been.
We had such a great day!

Learning how to make a boat in the Wampanoag village

The Indians and Pilgrims are all in full character.
She was making a belt.
I said to her.."wow, that's a big belt"
she just kind of stared at me.

Visiting the huts.

When we got to the Pilgrim's village
I said to the kids..."oh I could totally live here!"
Seriously, look at that view.
Can't you just see the Mayflower sailing in?

Bad picture
but I had to show her open shelving.
Love that.

wonder what her view from her kitchen sink is.

Stephen loves history.
And was pretty much quizzing me on the way home.

We ate lunch there
and of course visited the gift shops.

I bought this cookbook.
I love it!
So many great photos and stories and recipes.
It was on sale
so I got two.
Want one?

Leave a comment telling me
if you make your own pie crust or cheat and buy the frozen kind.

  1. I always thought the Pillsbury ready made crust is pretty good.
    But, I hate to bake!
Love to cook, but baking, not so much!

  2. I do both. ( = It depends on how I'm feeling and what I'm baking. If I want something really sweet and delicious...I make it myself.

  3. i'm a pie crust cheater every step of the way ... i just could never seem to outdo the pillsbury kind, so i gave in and never looked back ;-)

what a fun day, btw - we drive right by sturbridge village each summer and each year i say 'this is the year!' ... until it isn't :( bad mommy ...

  4. Pam, what a fun place to visit this time of year! I could live right there too. When i was a kid, playing like i lived in a simple village out in our yard, was one of my favorite games. Crust from scratch ... That's my style. I think it would take me longer to drive to the store :)

  5. This is ironic, because we actually googled the Plimoth Plantation website yesterday for Micah's paper on the Mayflower. I wondered if it was close to you or not!
As for pie and me with my limited cooking desires--pie crust is one of the few things that I can MAKE and it's delicious!!! Especially on a cherry pie with lattice!

  6. Oh I could so live there too! I was there years ago and it was fascinating. We just studied about Plimoth Plantation and the Wampanoag tribe yesterday in homeschool!! I'm taking the boys to a small local Indian Museum on Friday, but it doesn't have near the history (or beauty) as Plimoth.
I almost always buy pie crust, but it has to be from Earth Fare or Whole Foods. I've never been good at making pie crust and to me, it's just not worth the work. I made a homemade one a couple weeks back and it was so bad I couldn't even eat it. :D

  7. Pam I always use the pillsbury crusts and get soo many compliments on them! I like to concentrate on the homemade filling and let pillsbury do the crust work for me!

  8. i dont do piecrust. my husband makes from scratch. looks like a great day. my family would like to visit the east coast sometime
    ...

  9. The last time I made homemade pie crust was in home ec on middle school...sad right? The family field trip looks like fun. Jamestown Settlement in Williamsburg looks very similar. My kids loved that place too. Very hands on!

  10. What a great day! Fun... education.... and shopping - all rolled in one! I always make my own pie crusts. But, this year I'll probably cheat - unless the hubby thinks he can tackle a pie crust. :-)

  11. I usually go with Pillsbury but recently I made one from scratch with whole wheat flour and it turned out terrible, so I'll be cheating from now on. Love your blog! Jennifer Browder (sohnjk@hotmail.com)

  12. I have NEVER made a pie crust...why? when the store bought tastes so good :)
    Looks like a fun day~

  13. I make my own crust using my mom's recipe and this year my apple pie took first place at our town's Harvest Festival! But sometimes I do cheat if it's for a weeknight potpie. Great giveaway...thanks!

  14. I cheat... but I always tell myself when I "grow up" I'll learn how to make it from scratch.
Is 41 too late to learn? :(

  15. I make my own! It's not amazing, but good enough! What a fun day!

  16. totally cheat as I can never get it right - its not shaped right, it cracks, it sticks to the rolling pin. and it KILLS me because my mom makes a great crust!

  17. Love that first picture. What a fun place! I cheat and buy the pre-made stuff when I do make pies, which is not very often. Anything that calls for the use of a rolling pin intimidates me. :)

  18. Of course I cheat and buy store made. I usually buy store made pies too. They really are good. :)
Would love to win the cookbook as I see a salt free page. That's what we are doing these days.

  19. I use my grandmothers recipe for pie crust. My favorite part is baking the left over pieces with cinnamon and sugar. Such a delicous treat!

  20. I've never made my own pie crust but since I just received my first KitchenAid mixer I've been trying new recipes and am going to attempt to make pies with homeade pie crust for Thanksgiving.

  21. I do a little of both, depending if I'm in a time crunch. Holidays usually means homemade, while any night desserts means Pillsbury or Stop & Shop's!

PS - Have you seen Megan's Woody video on You Tube? Love it! We're going to kidnap you one day soon, we say!!

  22. Cheater, cheater, pie crust maker!

As you can tell, I like shortcuts :)

  23. I cheat:) I wish I had paid more attention when my mom would make the most wonderful pie crusts:(

  24. I'm a cheater all the way! And my Dad was a baker!!

  25. I always make my own. I like to put herbs in dough for savory dishes like pot pies, and spices in the dough for fruit pies. I love a cardamom crust with apple pie. I will have to say that some of my combos taste better than others but it is fun experimenting.

  26. Oh my I totally cheat and use the Pillsbury roll out kind. It is never fail. I LOVE that top picture. All the kids look great but Griffy's little face captured my heart in that photo.

  27. It totally depends on the day, but, I mostly make my pie crust from scratch....and shhhhhhh.....don't tell, but I only use lard. :-) You get the best flakiest crust and I can just feel my great grandmothers' and grandmas' eyes smiling at me while making it. :-)

  28. I make mine from scratch. It might not look the best, but it taste good and I just tell myself I am going for the "rustic" look. :)

  29. Jeff makes the pies -- Pillsbury crust. But we might try a joint effort with a homemade crust this year. Plymouth Plantation looks like my kind of place. I mean, there's the OCEAN behind you, for goodness sakes!

  30. How fun!! I love it! And I buy TJ's pie crust. :)

  31. Totally buy it! When my dream of owning a Kitchen Aid mixer is realized I shall make mine :).

  32. I use frozen pie crust-Marie Callenders-very good. I do have my Grandma Evelyn's pie crust recipe if I decide to make my own.

  33. Oh I'm so jealous. I live in Maine and we made the trip to Plimouth Plantation last year and had the best time. I just love how they never break out of character. My husband is planning a getaway for us and ask where I'd like to go. I said Plimouth plantation and iikea in Stoughton. He thinks I'm so weird.

I occasionally make PW's pie crust, but more often I buy frozen (hanging my head in shame).

  34. We used to go to Sturbridge Village as kids. It was a few hours away just over the border. Now we have Colonial Williamsburg and huts right along our bike path. I feel like I DO live "there" so to speak. :) I do love how they stay in character at all times. So very fun. Love that pic of the woman checking her pots. Looks just like a postcard from PP. I think you should sell it to them. :)

I totally cheat and buy frozen pie crusts.

  35. too cute!! the pics are awesome and such beautiful views, I have to agree! The kids look happy :) Now on to the pie crust: sometimes I cheat and buy the Pillsbury frozen crust that you thaw and then put in the pie plate. Sometimes I make my own, but it has been a long time!! Love both options! hugs, cathy
